One size does not fit all

Your resume, one of the most influential documents you own, must exude confidence, star quality and must stand out from the competition. It's neither an art nor a science, simply common sense to tailor your resume to suit the job you are applying for.

Simplicity

Keep it simple, steer clear of gimmicky typography and illegible colours, they look unprofessional and non-serious. Instead, go for clear and universal fonts. A well designed resume, which reads easily, and flows point to point will get you past the first hurdle. You want to prove your skills, so don't let your resume do you injustice.

Awards/Memberships

Make sure you sell yourself, for example if you have won an award or are a member of a professional body, then state it clearly. If it's a credit to you and it\'s relevant, then include it. All your related training courses and qualifications should be bulleted on your resume.

Resume length

Some say that resumes should typically be no longer than two pages, however in the real estate, property and construction industry, you would be well advised to expand on information relating to your field. This means you should include information on projects you have worked on. You may even want to provide a portfolio listing the developments you have been exposed to.

A well-written real estate/construction based resume can be within 3-4 pages.

What to include

  • Personal Information- name, date of birth, address, contact details
  • A personal profile- a summary encompassing your personality, attitude and ambitions
  • Key skills- highlight them and present these in a bullet point format
  • Career to date- always start with your most recent employment and work backwards. State the company, your position and the dates of your employment. There is no need to go too far back, simply include relevant information tailored for the role you are applying to. Think about the information your future employer is looking for, and then build your resume. Don't waffle, but do sell yourself. Remember, if it's a credit to you and it's relevant, then mention it
  • Education and Qualifications- where did you study? when did you study? What did your study? What was your result?
  • Awards and additional training- have you acquired any additional skills, or undertaken further training?
  • References
  • If you really want to differentiate yourself, why not attach a portfolio, short video profile, or a URL to your website showcasing your project involvement. Remember to keep it concise and relevant.
